  • How do you handle bad news when a study goes awry?
  • Is there an 'Interview Bill of Rights'?
  • How do you approach reporters?
  • Why might you be required to?

NEWS / ANNOUNCEMENTS

NIH has created one website to manage all of their listserv subscriptions, search all listservs and change preferences for your subscriptions!

MGH transitions to Electronic Submission – Research Management now wants 4 full weeks prior to deadline to review your grant!  And they want to know about it in ADVANCE!

MGH Training for NIH E-Submission – March 15,2006

NIH has created one website to manage all of their listserv subscriptions, search all listservs and change preferences for your subscriptions!

The site is https://list.nih.gov/cgi-bin/wa, but if you don't know what to look for, it's a little overwhelming.  Here are three suggested listservs that can be found by searching for them by name:

NIHTOC-L
Comes from the NIH Guide for Grants & Contracts - sends funding opportunities and notices every Friday. Helpful to read to see what are "hot" areas of research.

NIH_ESUB_PI-L
Sends Electronic Submission update to PIs.

EXTRAMURALNEXUS
Quarterly update from the NIH Office of Extramural Research to the external biomedical research community.

MGH transitions to Electronic Submission – Research Management now wants 4 full weeks prior to deadline to review your grant!  And they want to know about it in ADVANCE!

TO: All PIs, Grant Administrators, Department Administrators, and Research Staff

RE: NIH Requires Electronic Grant Application for R03, R13, R21, S10 and others

S10 Shared Instrumentation Grant due March 22, 2006
R41/42/43/44 STTR, SBIR due April 1, 2006
R13/U13 Conference Grant due April 15, 2006
X02 Pre-app/Interdisciplinary Rsch Consortium due April 18, 2006
R03 Small Grant due June 1, 2006
R21/R33 Exploratory/Development Rsch Grant due June 1, 2006
R34 Clinical Trial Planning Grant due June 1, 2006

The electronic submission process requires the use of new forms (“Standard Form 424 R&R”), and a new process (the Grants and Contracts Office must upload completed application forms to the Grants.gov site).  NIH REQUIRES the new forms and process for these application types.

In order to ensure your applications are received at NIH by the required deadline, we need to know your plans to submit any of the above listed application types.  If you are considering submitting one of these applications, please email the following information to PHS Research Management at RPHS2@partners.org immediately so that we can contact you regarding next steps:

PI Name and Email Address:
PI Service/Department/Division/Unit:
Grant Deadline(s):
Grant Mechanism(s):

If you do not notify us of your planned submission, we may not be able to submit your application. The Grants and Contracts Office must upload all applications to Grants.gov, and we have found that some applications can take 3 or more hours to upload.  We anticipate having to upload as many as 100 applications from MGH and BWH.  Please notify us immediately of your plans to submit so that we can assign the resources required to submit your application

In addition to notifying us of your intent to submit, please prepare by taking the following steps:
  • Download required PureEdge Software to your computer (MAC users see our website below)
  • Obtain required portable document format software (a .pdf file writer)
  • Contact your central grant administrator to register for the NIH eCommons, if you do not already have an NIH eCommons login ID

For more information about NIH electronic proposal submission and what we are doing to prepare for this change at BWH and MGH, please visit our website.

MGH Training for NIH E-Submission – March 15,2006

Which grants will need to be submitted electronically in the next few months?

The following grant deadlines will require the use of the new 424 forms. You, or your PI – or both, will need training on how to use the 424 forms ONLY if you have one of these grants going in for one of these deadlines:

  • Type of Grant Title of Grant Date Grant is due to Research Management Date final version MUST be ready for upload to NIH NIH Deadline
    S10 Shared Instrumentation Grant 03/10/2006 03/15/2006 03/22/2006
    R41/42/43/44 STTR, SBIR 03/13/2006 03/27/2006 04/01/2006
    R13/U13 Conference Grant 03/24/2006 04/03/2006 04/15/2006
    X02 Pre-app/Interdisciplinary Rsch Consortium 03/27/2006 04/11/2006 04/18/2006
    R03 Small Grant 05/09/2006 05/25/2006 06/01/2006
    R21/R33 Exploratory/Development Rsch Grant 05/09/2006 05/25/2006 06/01/2006
    R34 Clinical Trial Planning Grant 05/09/2006 05/25/2006 06/01/2006

If my department isn't submitting one of these kind of grants for these deadlines, do I need training on how to fill out the 424 forms?

Negative. Keep using the current 398 forms and submission process. You won't need any additional training until sessions begin for InfoEd (see below).

If my department IS submitting one of these kind of grants, what's the procedure to get training?

Hopefully, you and your PI's have received a copy (or six) of the email sent out by Marcia Smith dated 2/28/06, which asked that anybody submitting one of the grants above respond with an email to the Research Management mailbox. RM has accumulated a list of MGH PI's planning to submit - currently it's at about 55. RM is contacting those PI's and their administrators via email and phone, starting with those who are submitting grants with March and April deadlines. Those people are first in line for the training sessions which have been set up by RM.

After the PI's submitting for March and April, the same process will be carried out for those submitting for the June deadlines.

    Grant Deadline(s):

Sessions are held at 50 Staniford Street, 10th floor and run for about 90 minutes.

What do I need to bring (or review in advance) for my training session?

You should bring the following: NIH is no longer accepting paper (398) forms for some grant applications and is requiring electronic submission.  If you are planning to submit any of the following grant applications on or after the receipt dates indicated, you must use the electronic submission process through Grants.gov:
    • Grants.gov Application Guide SF424 (R&R) (Download .doc)
    • Mapping the 398 to the SF424 (R&R) (Download .pdf)
    • Sample packet for an MGH application - will be provided at the meeting

You can print the 2 out in advance and take a look, but you will promptly fall into a deep coma. Just kidding. They're riveting!

InfoEd: who will need to be trained?

Everybody - anybody who submits or assists with the preparation of a grant. The big plus is that it's infinitely more intuitive to use than the 424, and a ton of information will already be pre-populated.

    When will InfoEd training begin?

It looks like it will begin in the fall of 2006. Marcia will keep everybody informed via emails and updates at the RADG meetings.

Will InfoEd be ready to use for the big R01 deadline of Feb 1, 2007?

Yes, unless a meteor wipes out Albany NY, where the company is headquartered.

What forms should be used for the big R01 deadlines in June, July, October and November of 2006?

Keep using the 398 forms and the current submission process.
